About myself

Overview of the site
I am a Norwegian anthropologist based at the Institute of anthropology, University of Copenhagen, in Denmark.
I have done anthropological fieldwork in the former Soviet Union (Leningrad 1978, 1983) and the United States (San Francisco 1989-90).
I have taught and supervised students for the last twenty years, at the Universities of Oslo and Tromsø (Norway) and the Institute of Anthropology in Copenhagen, where I today lead the East / Central Europe Research Group.
I have written about Russia and the Soviet Union, about the United States and Europe, and about theory in anthropology and social science; I have worked in journalistic and literary, as well as academic genres.  I have recently authored a textbook on fieldwork methods, co-edited a volume on trends in theory-building, and co-authored a textbook on the history of anthropology.
I offer a selection of courses on "cultural understanding and intercultural communication" to businesses, schools, NGO’s and other institutions that deal with practical problems of culture contact on a daily basis.
With my wife and colleague, Kari Helene Partapuoli, I edit AnthroBase.com, a multilingual, searchable database of anthropological texts.
